"Like a mixtape, a Steve Keene painting is meant to be passed hand to hand, with affection. He’s been giving them away, or selling them for a song, going on thirty years... Play “Cut Your Hair” as you read: that’s a great song and this is a great book about a great artist. His paintings sell out, but he never has." - Bookforum
Steve Keene’s collaborations with Pavement ("Wowee Zowee", "Shady Lane" trees, etc...), The Apples in stereo, David Berman/Silver Jews, and Will Oldham, amongst others are legend. He’s an important part of the 90s indie art and music scenes.
The Steve Keene Art Book—originally conceived during his sold out show at Shepard Fairey's LA Gallery Subliminal Projects in 2016—is the first art book dedicated exclusively to Keene's work and much like his connection to music scene, it's LP box-set size fits perfectly on your record rack. Perhaps the most prolific painter of all time, Keene has produced more than 300,000 hand-painted works via his studio/chainlink fence cage where he paints more than 50 paintings at a time.
Included in the Steve Keene Art Book are many of his album art tributes to Pavement including some examples here.
