The image on the shirt is a variation on the MACROSCOPE CD and vinyl labels designed by Spottswood Erving. The lips are those of the renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, to whom the piece "Macroscopic" is dedicated. Kusama-san is famous for her polka dots, and I felt that Spottswood's disassembling/reordering of the words "THE NELS CLINE SINGERS" and "MACROSCOPE" in some manner resembled the "infinity nets" or many dots or particles of a universe seen at some sort of atomic level. It is this vision of the universe that has been both a hallmark of Kusama's work as well as an obstacle to her mental health. Some sort of visionary experience relating to this occurred to Kusama-san when she was young and has persisted at sometimes alarming levels. Her intense personal vision and iconoclastic courage are a source of inspiration to me. Hence my writing the (sort of) ballad "Macroscopic" for the new Singers record, which starts plaintively in a sort of rubato state of emptiness and is gradually subsumed by sonic particles - particles which represent Kusama-san's obsessive polka dots and infinity nets.
